The Unexpected Challenges of the PA Ignition Interlock License Process
Many clients are surprised to learn that the Ignition Interlock application process is longer than expected.
- The Wait: Even when nothing goes wrong, you should plan for about 20 to 30 business days from the day the interlock is installed until you actually have the license in hand.
- The Clock: This delay often creates confusion about the duration of the program. Crucially, the mandatory interlock period starts the day the license is issued, NOT the day the system is installed. Since you must have the system installed before applying, you should expect to pay for an extra month (or two) of having the system in your vehicle while you wait for the license.
Why You Need an Advocate on Your Side
The majority of the applications we handle experience some kind of error from the DOT, which leads to a delay or outright rejection of the application.
Often, the rejections are minor, such as a missing payment or a misplaced document. We are known for clearing up complicated issues, and we can usually resolve these minor problems easily by proving payment or helping them locate the document in their paperwork pile.
However, some rejections are more serious.
We’ve had three cases that required filing for an administrative hearing to appeal PennDOT’s decision to deny the license. We successfully had all three decisions reversed, and the license was granted!
